eSIM Egypt: Ready Before Take-off, Online After Landing
With an eSIM Egypt data plan from Anosim, you land in Cairo or Alexandria with mobile internet already set up on your phone. Egypt is a destination where most of the work happens at home: you install the eSIM before departure and only switch it on once you are in the country. This guide follows your trip in order, from the phone check on your sofa to the first connection after landing.
Is your phone ready for an eSIM in Egypt?
Looking for the best eSIM for Egypt? Start with your own phone, because no plan helps if the device cannot use it. Two conditions apply: the phone must be eSIM-capable, and it must not have a carrier lock. In the settings, usually under mobile data or SIM, an option to add an eSIM shows that your device supports it.
One exception is worth knowing: some iPhone models from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau come without eSIM, even if similar models elsewhere have it.
At home: install the Egypt eSIM before you fly
Do the setup a day or two before departure, while you have reliable Wi-Fi and time.
Order the Egypt plan
Choose Egypt in the order form, pick a data plan and log in. Your prepaid eSIM for Egypt is paid from your Anosim balance, which you top up with cryptocurrency or a bank transfer. No ID check is required.
Scan the QR code on your home Wi-Fi
The QR code appears in your account under My eSIM Plans. Your phone has to be online while you scan it. The code can only be used once, so keep the installed eSIM profile and do not try to scan it a second time; if anything goes wrong, our support takes over.
Leave the eSIM switched off for now
Installing early costs you nothing. The plan's validity starts with the first connection to a supported network in Egypt, and you have 180 days from purchase to activate it.
After landing in Egypt: three settings
Once the plane has landed, open your phone settings and change three things:
1. Switch the Egypt eSIM on.
2. Choose it as the line for mobile data.
3. Enable data roaming on that line.
Within one to two minutes the eSIM normally connects to a local network, and you can order a ride or message your hotel from the arrivals hall. If nothing happens, restart the phone, switch airplane mode on and off, and make sure network selection is on automatic.
Where the eSIM works: Cairo, Giza, Alexandria and beyond
Your eSIM for Egypt has coverage in Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Port Said, Suez, Tanta and Helwan, as well as in other cities. An eSIM in Cairo keeps maps and ride apps running between the hotel and the old town; in Giza you can share photos of the pyramids straight away, and in Alexandria or Port Said you stay reachable on messengers.
The connection uses 3G, 4G/LTE or 5G, depending on the network operator and where you are. Heavy use can lead to a lower speed under the operator's fair-use rules.
Egypt is outside the EU roaming rules, so a European tariff usually charges roaming there. Travelling on to North Africa or the Mediterranean? See eSIM Morocco and eSIM Turkey.
Hotspot in Egypt depends on the network operator
Whether you can share your data via hotspot in Egypt is decided by the local network operator, not by your phone. Do not plan your trip around it: if you need internet on a laptop or for several travellers, it is safer when everyone with an eSIM-capable phone has their own Egypt eSIM.
What you can do online in Egypt, and what not
The Egypt eSIM is a data plan. You can browse, use messengers, make internet calls such as WhatsApp calls, stream and upload photos and videos. Regular phone calls and SMS are not possible on it, because there is no phone number.
Your normal SIM stays in the phone. That way your usual number remains reachable, for example on WhatsApp, while the eSIM carries the data traffic.
Verification codes on your Egypt trip
Some services send an SMS code before you can log in or book, and a data-only eSIM cannot receive it. For those moments, Anosim has numbers you can use next to the eSIM:
- Activation: a number for a single code.
- Rent Service: a number reserved for one service, in case it asks again later.
- Rent Number: a full number for all services.
If a number is virtual, it is labelled as such in the provider selection. More destinations are listed on the eSIM page.
Frequently asked questions
When should I install the eSIM for Egypt?
Before your trip, on Wi-Fi. In Egypt you only switch it on, select it for mobile data and enable data roaming.
Does installing at home use up my plan?
No. Validity starts with the first connection to a supported network in Egypt. Activate the plan within 180 days of purchase.
Can I share data via hotspot in Egypt?
That depends on the network operator in Egypt. Do not rely on it if you need internet on several devices.
Does the eSIM work in Giza and Alexandria?
Yes. Coverage includes Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Port Said, Suez, Tanta, Helwan and other cities.
Do I need my passport to buy the eSIM?
No. There is no ID check when you buy an eSIM data plan from Anosim.
Can I receive SMS on the Egypt eSIM?
No. The plan carries data only and comes without a number. Codes can be received with Activation, Rent Service or Rent Number instead.
Will people still reach me on my own number?
Yes. Your regular SIM stays in the phone, so your number stays reachable, for example on WhatsApp.
The eSIM does not connect after landing. What now?
Check that data roaming is on for the eSIM, restart the phone and toggle airplane mode. If that does not help, our support is available 24/7 via Telegram, website chat and email.
